[edit] Core Beliefs
The core beliefs of Christianity are contained in the Bible, particularly the New Testament. Naturally there is wide scope for interpretation. In an effort to unite the faith, and to oppose heresy, core beliefs of Christianity have been recorded in creeds[1].
These core beliefs (according to the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed) are:
- That Jesus Christ was the Son of God
- That Jesus is part of an eternal trinity with the Father God and the Holy Spirit
- That Jesus Christ became incarnate (human), born by the Virgin Mary
- That Jesus died, and was resurrected three days later
- That Jesus has the power to forgive sins
- That there will come a day of judgement, after which believers will be granted eternal life
Note that many Christians subscribe to these beliefs without specifically recognising the authority of the creeds.
There are some groups who self-identify as Christian who do not share these core beliefs. These include
- Jehovah's Witnesses
- Unitarians
- Ebionites
- Oneness Pentecostals
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
