[edit] Myths about the Freemasons
Masons freely admit that their society holds many secrets that its members aren't allowed to share with the general public, which is part of Freemasonry's appeal. Most of these secrets are as innocuous as the handshake used to greet and identify one-another on the street, but no one other than the Order's highest ranking members knows all of the secrets.
In the mind of an outsider who's even mildly paranoid, this can create the impression that these secrets are of Earth-shattering importance. Conspiracy theorists have blamed Freemasons for everything from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to the Great Depression to the American revolutionary war to the rises and falls of whole nations.
