Talk:"Hitler was an Atheist"

In what way can this question be considered open? His speeches and writings make him plainly a theist. Against this we are met to set... oh, look, an interest in pagan religion. Well, even if we had hard documentary proof that he worshipped Odin, that wouldn't make him an atheist, would it? That would make him a theist.

Because he was also a politician, and politicians lie. Anyone who takes a politician's "speeches and writings" for absolute truth is a fool. -- Dr K.

And as you know I am not a fool, you are in a good position to deny your straw antecedent. I asked what we are to set against the writings and speeches quoted. If someone maintained that Hitler was really philosemitic, but was hypocritical about it, I'd ask the same question. As I've pointed out, evidence for an interest in pagan religion is not evidence for atheism. Where is the evidence to suggest he was an atheist?

[edit] Was he a vegetarian?

I've heard this, but I've also heard that he just ate a lot of vegetables because he thought they were good for his ulcers but ate meat occasionally. epepke 15 October 2005 06:00 (GMT)

According to Snopes:

Hitler's diet was primarily vegetarian throughout the latter part of his life; however, he didn't adopt a vegetarian diet for moral reasons, but because he suffered from gastric problems.

IIRC, his favorite food was roast duck. The reason this lodged in my head is that it's also mine. I also share a star sign with him. I guess I must be evil.
